Magnesium – the next silver bullet to fight disease

If you read my posts, you already know I’m a huge fan of Life Extension Foundation.  I can hardly wait each month when my magazine arrives, and it’s the only magazine I read cover-to-cover.  The December 2016 issue was touting a mineral nothing short of a breakthough, butI have been aware of since 2009 and before (refer to my past posts).  Studies now show a “76% risk increase in pancreatic cancer incidence in magnesium-deficient humans” and in a study involving Japanese men “found that those with the highest dietary intake of magnesium were over 50% less likely to contract colon cancer.”  (See references listed at the end of this article).

In past articles from Life Extensions foundation, magnesium deficiency has been associated with heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and malabsorption of calcium resulting in less than optimal bone density.  And involved with over 300 cellular functions in the body.

“Magnesium plays essential roles in regulating genome stability, cell signaling, insulin sensitivity, systemic inflammation, and DNA maintenance and repair. It is therefore not surprising that low intake of magnesium is associated with increased risk of certain cancers.” 

In the United States, you are likely not getting your requirement through diet or water due to our commercial processing, mega-farms reusing the same soil decade after decade, and the water treatment and purification process that strips many minerals from the water.  It is necessary to supplement. There was recommended doses in the article, however, I think there is a better way to gage your need.  Everyone’s body is different.  Some folks have higher weight, and the therapeutic amounts of supplements can be affected by multiple factors like weight, activity, other supplements, and diet.  What I have seen work, is a slow and steady increase starting with 100mg, and increasing by 100mg every 5 days until you reach 500mg.  If you are finding your restroom visits too frequent, back down to somewhere between 300mg and 500mg.  If you shop at Life Extension Foundation, you can purchase Extended-Release Magnesium for as little as $8.75 each (member price) and that is a very small price to pay for a mineral that increases your health and longevity

New Report on Environmental Toxins and Link to Autism

Perhaps the most devastating news a new parent can receive is that something is wrong with their new baby. The word “autism” used to be a rarely used word. When I was a child, I knew only one child with autism. Forty years later, it is the fear of every new parent with statics greater than one per one hundred children born, and growing.

I have not gone into a great deal of research on this topic because it is expansive, however, the news article that was released today by Dr. Mercola is an excellent read! Here is the link:

The link between toxic loading and birth defects has now been studied on a major population segment, and according to the study, there is a correlation between environmental toxins, autism, and family income.

Until further information is known, there are things you can do now to lower your risk for toxic loading. I’ve made a list, of the easiest to the more expensive, and it starts with your water!

1) Don’t ever drink unfiltered tap water. It is full of toxins, and not fit for human consumption. Drink reverse osmosis purified water if possible, putting a system on your incoming water supply so you don’t bath or shower in it either. If you want an inexpensive quick fix, use a Zero water pitcher. It comes with a TDS *total dissolved solids” water tester that you can use to test all the water you drink. I carry one with me when I travel, and I test the bottled water I purchase to ensure it is filtered to my standards of .006 TDS or less. That is 6 parts per million, and nothing more!
2) Buy and consume only organically grown food, and do not wash it in the tainted, contaminated tap water! Use filtered water to wash and cook with, always!
3) Do not eat out at non-organic restaurants, which means when you travel you need to plan your stops or pack your food ahead of time
4) Do not use shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, deodorants, perfumes, cosmetics, that are not 100% certified organic and toxin free. The cheapest ingredients are used by the commercial giants that make these products, and they’ve no concern for your health. Your skin is the largest organ in the body. Putting contaminated lotions on just does not make sense. Try pure coconut oil and you’ll be surprised how great your skin feels
5) Stop the consumption of all protein powders and bars unless they are certified organic and been evaluated for heavy metal toxins (refer to 2010 Consumers’ Report study and recent reports from Mike Adams, The Health Ranger)
6) Wash clothes with organic products and do not use fabric softener sheets, rather use wool dryer balls to fluff clothing and take out static. Chlorine (as used in popular cleaners) is a known carcinogenic. So, get educated on what being ‘clean’ really means, and what you need to stop immediately
7) Change all your household cleaners to organic, and make your own cleaners using alcohol, baking soda, vinegar, and naturally derived soaps like glycerin
8) Remove as much carpet as possible, and try to get as much furniture without the new flame retardants. Recent laws passed require highly toxic flame retardants to be added to sofas, mattresses and carpets. If you must have a new mattress, cover it in a hypo-allergenic cover after allowing it to ‘air out’ for a couple of weeks before you use it
9) Do not smoke! There are thousands of elements in a cigarette that are not tobacco. If you smoke, you WILL get cancer if your heart doesn’t give out first
10) Do not walk into your house with your outdoor shoes, and put booties on your pets when they go out so they can take their shoes off too! Many of the heavy metals, petroleum, and just plain ol’ germs come from your walk outside. Treat your home like your castle and protect it from outside toxins
11) Invest in a high quality air purifier and use it year ’round

Of course, we cannot be perfect, but if you try as often as possible, you’ll be able to greatly reduce your toxic loading!

Targeted Wrinkle Treatment

Why do we wrinkle? (A question that would take an entire book to answer!) How to Stop the Aging Internally, for Brain and Heart Health

A good friend of mine commented this morning that he believes he has seen a 25% decrease in his “sharpness” and overall brain function and asked me if I am doing anything to slow down this type of decline. My investigation shows there is a great deal of research on two things that work from the inside of your body, at a system and cellular level, to improve your fight against this type of decline; CoQ10 and SAM-e. (All information pertaining to the sources of this article can be found in the April 2014 issue of Life Extension Magazine.)

A recent 10 year study conclusively showed that CoQ10 supplements dramatically improve survival for heart patients while also reducing hospitalizations (Life Extension Magazine, April 24, 2014). CoQ10 reduces chronic oxidative stress, improves functioning of the endothelium, arterial relaxation, and oxygen utilization. Oxidative stress and endothelial dysfunction are major causes of elevated blood pressure. In plain English, it gets oxygen to the cells more efficiently.

“Studies show that CoQ10 supplementation at 300mg/day not only restores normal CoQ10 levels, but prevents progression of heart failure and in fact can reverse that progression and extend survival and improve quality of life” (Life Extension Magazine, April 24, 2014).

CoQ10 doesn’t stop with the heart, but works amazingly well in cognitive brain function and prevention and regulation of depression. In studies involving aging animals, it was shown to decelerate the aging process, decrease the amount of destructive amyloid beta plaque in brain tissue, reduce the loss of dopamine-producing neurons (as seen in Parkinson’s disease), and at 1200mg/day appeared to slow functional decline in those with early age related decline (Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, etc.) (Life Extension Magazine, April 24, 2014).

For years health practitioners have seen excellent results in treating depression with no side effects with the naturally occurring brain chemical s-adenosylmethionine (SAM-e for short). “In addition to boosting brain chemicals important to mood health, SAM-e promotes the synthesis of other compounds that are crucial to functions such as gene expression and DNA repair.” (Life Extension Magazine, April 24, 2014).

If you have never heard of methylation, its one of the most important functions in the body, at the cellular level. “Vital biochemical processes in the body rely on methylation. These include the synthesis of nucleic acids (DNA and RNA), proteins, phospholipids, and neurotransmitters.”

SAM-e’s ability to protect the body from aging, and age-related diseases such as cancer, neurodegeneration, and autoimmune diseases has been shown in numerous studies where methylation effect was demonstrated.

Personal experience:
I suffered from narcolepsy for almost 10 years. I managed it with a drug cocktail that would scare anybody, but when I had an opportunity to live and work in Sweden, the doctors there told me about the benefits of SAM-e and how I should try it for the sleep disorder. Finally, I had an opportunity to read more, decided to try it, and discovered that when I took 1600mg daily, I had no symptoms of narcolepsy. During that time, I also removed all the prescription drugs for the treatment of narcolepsy. About 6 months after taking it, I ran out. In the week it took to reorder it, I had no symptoms. Basically, I never had to take SAM-e again. Although this is not a scientific, double-blind experiment, it was life-changing and I appear to be cured. Fourteen years later, I’ve never so much as experienced drowsiness and I can drive and work feeling confident.

Omega-3 to Omega-6 Ratios and Your Health

There is a great deal of buzz about the omega fats, specifically omega-3 and omega-6 and the associated “ratio” between the consumption of both. You certainly must have both to be healthy, but it is the combination of the two that is critical.

Without reading the entire article, I can summarize this much for you:

You must eat plenty of fish to be healthy, and avoid as much processed food as possible.

To get absolutely scientific about it requires a great deal of analysis on how much omega 6 you are currently eating.

Chris Kresser’s website is an excellent source for a detailed explanation in which he writes “Over the course of human evloution there has been a dramatic change in the ratio of omega 6 and omega 3 fats consumed in the diet. This change, perhaps more than any other dietary factor, has contributed to the epidemic of modern disease.”

A sampling of oils and foods provides some insight:

Food Omega-6 Omega-3

Flaxseed 14% 57%

What happens when you have too much omega 6 and not enough omega 3? You have inflammatory diseases and very bad skin and hair.

There are volumes of information on the Internet to help you figure out your dietary habits and its impact. But your body is probably even better. If you suffer from the list of diseases below (taken from Chris Kresser’s article mentioned above) you might benefit from a change in diet:

SALT; Friend or Foe

My son can take one look at a plant and tell you most everything about it; what minerals it needs, if it is being watered properly, and if the lighting conditions are right.  How does he know?  By how it “looks!”  Not too long ago, doctors did not have the plethora of clinical tests when treating patients.  For one thing, a patient may have traveled by horse and buggy for a day to reach a doctor.  There was not a “follow up” appointment, nor was there a 30 day supply of prescription medicine given for a refill for the rest of your life.  The means of diagnosis were simple;  symptoms, pain, hair, skin, nails, tongue, eyes.  A doctor could look at a patient and know what might be going on internally.  How does this relate to salt?  Our condition of dis-ease in the US is directly related to the lack of minerals in our diet.  According to Dr. Joel Wallach, in “Dead Doctors Don’t Lie” there are 91 minerals required to keep our bodies in perfect working condition…and plants only require 3!


Dr. David Brownstein reports, in his book “Salt Your Way to Health” that we have an epidemic of thyroid disorders from a lack of iodine and other minerals.  The thyroid is extremely prone to balance issues with the the imbalance of minerals.  Since the introduction of processed salt, we have seen an increase in mineral deficiencies and the dis-ease associated with it.  (And I love that word dis-ease, because it truly describes the condition of the body that is struggling to survive).

So what is the key to consuming salt and not experiencing high blood pressure, and other dis-ease typically associated with salt?  The key is to take in your salt in its natural, mineral rich, form.  Sea salt!  Typical processed table salt has had all the minerals removed, additives that can be toxic added to make it easy to pour and less likely to clump, and creates a dangerous imbalance between magnesium, potassium, and sodium.

Dr. Sircus writes:

Sodium is an energy carrier. It is also responsible for sending messages from the brain to muscles through the nervous system so that muscles move on command. When you want to move your arm or contract any muscle in your body, your brain sends a message to a sodium molecule that passes it to a potassium molecule and then back to a sodium molecule etc., etc., until it gets to its final destination and the muscle contracts. This is known as the sodium-potassium ion exchange. Therefore, without sodium, you would never be able to move any part of your body.

Excess sodium (such as that obtained from dietary sources) is excreted in the urine.[2] Most of the sodium in the body (about 85%) is found in blood and lymph fluid. Sodium levels in the body are partly controlled by a hormone called aldosterone, which is made by the adrenal glands. Aldosterone levels determine whether the kidneys hold sodium in the body or pass it into the urine.

Dr. David Brownstein weighs in heavily on this matter saying, “Nobody makes a distinction between unrefined and refined salt. They ‘lump’ all salt together as a bad substance. This is a terrible mistake. There are two forms of salt available in the market place: refined and unrefined. Refined salt has had its minerals removed and has been bleached to give it the white appearance that we are accustomed to seeing with salt. It is the fine, white salt that is available at almost any restaurant or grocery store. Refined salt has been bleached and exposed to many toxic chemicals in order to get it to its final product. It has aluminum, ferrocyanide, and bleach in it. I believe this refining process has made it a toxic, devitalized substance that needs to be avoided.”  (reference:

I look forward to the day where women carry their Celtic or Himalayan Sea Salt grinders in their purse for use at restaurants who have not heard the word, and to restaurants that switch to the unrefined, nutritionally superior salts available everywhere!

Food as medicine!

My son, who is working out and very active this summer, called to tell me he cured his Athlete’s Foot in one week with some advice from his doctor. His doctor, who is a famous doctor in the Detroit area explained that his condition is caused from a yeast overgrowth in his body. Your body always has millions of yeast and other organisms living happily in and on, usually in harmony. When an imbalance occurs, we call it “disease”. A dis-ease does not call for harsh chemicals, rather for a gentle lifestyle shift.

In this case my son added iodine to his diet in large enough amounts to balance the body. Rather than use a supplement, which he has trouble digesting or tolerating at times, he used kelp wraps from Whole Foods to supplement his diet. In one week, all symptoms gone!

Juicing – advice for two body types!

Too fat?  Body starved for nutrients and crying out “I’m hungry” even after a large meal?  I feel your pain.  It’s my life in a nutshell!

The critical links; B Vitamins, Hypothyroidism, and Dementia

We all have complaints.  As we age, things just don’t look the same, feel the same, or work the same.  But the biggest fear of something gone wrong these days is the loss of our brain power.  I eat too much, and I’m a bit overweight, but good God, I KNOW I AM OVERWEIGHT!  I look at aging relatives and friends, and the thought of losing the brain (since I’m an engineer) is very scary.

The latest news from Life Extension Foundation “B vitamin supplements slow brain atrophy in cognitively impaired patients” is nothing short of a miracle, or the hope of one.  “The results of a double-blinded clinical trial reported online on September 8, 2010 in the journal PLoSONE revealed that men and women with mild cognitive impairment who were supplemented with vitamin B6, vitamin B12, and folic acid experienced a reduction in the rate of brain atrophy compared with those who received a placebo.  (REF:

Add this key piece of information to the fact that Americans are suffering from hypothyroidism at an increased rate.  When you have hypothyroidism, your body does not absorb vitamin B12.  Many people are never diagnosed, and have the sub-optimal levels of hormones and suffer in silence.  There are many articles written about the causes of hypothyroidism and they include iodine deficiency as well as fluoridated public water.  (One thing I stopped drinking a few years ago was non-filtered water!)

If you see yourself in the above list, go to your physician and get your hormone levels checked.  The aging process is certainly accelerated by a lack of good nutrition, and if you are not able to absorb your B vitamins, you need to know.
